For the first time in about three weeks, I actually woke up before ten o’clock. I’m thinking with school starting just a week away, I should be setting my eternal clock back to it’s regular schedule. However, if the wind keeps blowing this hard, it might just drive me back under the covers. But I suppose it’s fitting that today would be windy. It’s like mother nature is sweeping out the old year, to make way for the new.
2009. Man, I hope it’s better than 08. But I suppose that’s up to us, mostly. Every year on this day, like most people, I always try to think about my actions and accomplishments of the previous year. I can’t say much for accomplishments, but it has defiantly been action packed. I’ve learned a lot, though none of it was lessons I was expecting. And I guess I’d have to say, at the rate of sounding very cheesy, that I wouldn’t change anything.
Well, ok, that’s a lie. There’s a lot that I would change if I had the chance. But, even though it’s been pretty crappy, good stuff has come out of it. And that’s what I wouldn’t change. The end result is what I want to keep.
I don’t think this new year’s eve should be about me looking back. That’s pretty much what I’ve been doing all year. No, today should be about me looking forward, about taking everything I’ve learned, everything I’ve gained, and promising to use all of that to make next year better than this one.
Happy New Year!

'UNC-G'osh this is nerve racking
I just dropped off my college application to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro at the post office. I’m all nerves at this point. Even though I’m fairly certain I’ll get in (my grades are not perfect, but they aren’t rubbish either) the thought of getting turned down still lingers in my mind.
But even scarier is the thought of getting in. Two years ago, when I was a freshman at Western Piedmont Community College, I wanted nothing more to graduate and go off to…anywhere. Even the crappiest college in the world would have done, just as long as I could get away from home, away from Morganton, away from everything that was holding me back and live! Now, I’m at the threshold of living, and it’s quiet scary.
I’ll be on my own, responsible for everything I do. That’s a lot to handle. I know it’s just irrational fear, and once I get out on my own and stretch my wings a bit I’ll be just fine. But lots of people go off to college only to return, because they can’t handle it. I’m just scared that I’m going to be one of them.
With the fear comes a humongous amount of excitement. I’m going to big boy college! I’m going to be learning things that I actually want to learn. I’m going to have so many more things to do, so many experiences will be opened to me that aren’t available here.
I’m going to be freaking out until I get that letter. Oh, man I hope it comes soon.
Go Spartans!

It's not easy being green
A couple of days ago Cassie and I were in a Walden’s Books, when I stumbled upon what has got to be the most retarded Bible ever published.
It’s called the Green Bible. The pages are made out of recycled paper, the ink is somehow environmentally safe, and the cover of the Bible is bound in a very thick, itchy, pale colored material that is also eco friendly.
But wait, it gets better.
As if the material weren’t enough to stress the point of greenness, every verse about nature has been highlighted in green!
In my opinion the whole green movement is a bit stupid. Recycling and becoming more aware of our environment is a good thing, but to turn it into a fad is a mistake. People don’t care that they are helping the world by buying green products or using recycled materials. They just want to do whatever is hip at the moment. Whenever the green phase goes out of style, they will drop the recycling and tree hugging and move onto something else, just as uncaring and uneducated about environmental matters as before.
But this Bible really struck a nerve with me. As Christians, are we really so shallow and affected by our secular culture that we market what we profess to be the Holy Word of God is a package that will go out of style the way leg warmers and grunge rock did?
Something about this just isn’t right.
What do you guys thing, my loyal blog fans (yes all four of you!)? I’d love for you guys to reply to this and let my know your thoughts on this subject.

Fracking Awesome!
This Christmas, I was given Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Epic Series Box Set. Nerd alert! I am a huge fan of the new series, but have never watched the original one before. It’s been interesting to note the changes Ronald D. Moore made when recreating the series, most obviously the gender switches of Starbuck, Boomer, and the president!
Another big change is the cylons. The cylons from the original series are robotic space aliens created by another race. In the new series, the cylons were created by man, and, after receiving enough knowledge to gain a consciousness and self identity, “woke up” and decided to turn on the humans. This change provides a sort of Tower of Babel effect: the humans tried to play God, and it came back to bite them in the butt.
Oh, and the new cylons are hotter. Much hotter!
One of my favorite characters from the new series, Baltar, is in the original series as well. The original series places Baltar as an evil traitor to the human race right from the first episode. In the new series Baltar’s role in the destruction of humanity is a little more complicated, and I like that. In fact, that is probably the biggest change in the recreation of the series, a deeper, more intelligent feel to the show. Many fans of the original Galactica were outraged when the new series premiered, and they realized it wasn’t going to be a swashbuckling, science fiction adventure series, but rather an in depth, character driven drama. In my opinion, science fiction and fantasy television would fair well with more shows such as this.
One thing that the original series handled better than the remained series was the story line of Zac Adama. In the new series, Zac has died several years before the first episode. He appears in flashbacks and is talked about heavily, but the lack of an actual character makes it hard to connect with the story line emotionally. In the original series, Zac has a little less than ten minutes of screen time before meeting his end; However, actually seeing his death played out makes it easer for the audience to connect with the character and feel the loss of Adama and Apollo.
It’s tragic that the original series was so short lived. As any fan of Star Trek, Firefly, or Joan of Arcadia can tell you, Television is no respecter of quality, and Battlestar Galactica was canceled before completing its first season. My guess would be because Galactica dealt with one of the taboo themes of television-religion. But what little life the series had was a fracking amazing life indeed.
Alright, there’s my nerd moment for the day!
